Biographical Text

Emma Mary Bouvier Drexel (1833-1883) was the daughter of Michel Bouvier and Louise C. Vernou. Emma married Francis A. Drexel in 1860, two years after the death of his first wife, Hannah Langstroth Drexel (1826-1858). She had one child with Francis, Louise Bouvier Drexel, half-sister to Elizabeth Langstroth Drexel Smith (1855-1890) and Saint Katharine Drexel (1858-1955).

She was a devout Catholic and instilled a strong philanthropic practice in her three daughters by opening her home as a location for direct charitable giving to women in need. Read more about her philanthropy.

Emma is great-grandaunt of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.
