Biographical Text

Walter George Smith (1854–1924) was the husband of Elizabeth Langstroth Drexel Smith (1855-1890), older sister of Saint Katharine Drexel and Louise Bouvier Drexel Morrell. Walter and Elizabeth married in 1890 though, sadly, Elizabeth died due to complications of childbirth and their child was stillborn.

Smith was an attorney and after his wife’s death, he continued as a close legal advisor to Saint Katharine and her religious order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Pope Pius X made him a knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1910 in recognition of his efforts, as a devout Catholic and respected legal authority, to halt the growing legal and social acceptance of divorce.
