Biographical Text

Edward de Veaux Morrell (1863–1917) married Louise Bouvier Drexel Morrell (1863-1945) in 1889. Louise was the only child born from Francis A. Drexel’s second marriage to Emma Bouvier Drexel. Louise was sister to Elizabeth Langstroth Drexel Smith and Saint Katharine Drexel. The Morrells had no children. They worked together to build a philanthropic legacy, founding Catholic educational institutions for youth in need.

Morrell was a lawyer before entering politics. He represented the 5th District of Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives from 1899–1907. In 1904, he gave a speech in the House decrying the violent disenfranchisement of African Americans, titled, “Negro Suffrage. Should the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments be repealed?” challenging a proposed repeal of the 14th and 15th constitutional amendments.
