Biographical Text

Louise Bouvier Drexel Morrell (1863-1945) was the only child born from Francis A. Drexel’s second marriage to Emma Bouvier Drexel. She was younger sister to Elizabeth Langstroth Drexel Smith and Saint Katharine Drexel. Louise married Edward de Veaux Morrell (1863–1917) in 1889. The couple had no children.

With her husband, Louise founded the St. Emma’s Industrial and Agricultural Institute in 1895 for African American boys. She also supported the St. Francis Industrial School established by her sister, prior to Elizabeth’s death in 1890, along with other educational and religious institutions. Her New York Times obituary quotes her charitable giving in these areas at more than 6 million dollars.
