Biographical Text

Livingston was born outside of Philadelphia in 1918 to Livingston Biddle, Sr. and Euginie Law. He graduated from Princeton University in 1940 majoring in French and English. He became a reporter for the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper until WWII, where he then became an ambulance driver in Africa, as he would not be able to serve due to poor eyesight. When he returned home, he began writing short stories and then four novels. In 1963 to 1965 he was a staff assistant for Senator Claiborne Pell, where he helped draft the legislation creating the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He was appointed the third chairmen of the NEA by President Jimmy Carter. His first wife, Cordelia Fenton, died in 1972, and they had one child together, Cordelia Biddle. His married his second wife, Catharina Baart, in 1973. Livingston died in 2002.
