Mary Johanna Drexel Lankenau
Title
Mary Johanna Drexel Lankenau
Biographical Text
Mary Johanna Drexel Lankenau (1822-1873) was the eldest child of Francis M. Drexel, sister to Anthony J., Francis A., and Joseph W. Drexel. In Mary’s childhood, she was featured in two portraits by her father Francis prior to his giving up portraiture for banking.
Mary married John D. Lankenau (1817-1901) in 1848 and the couple had two children who survived to adulthood: Francis W. Lankenau (?-1877) and Elise Lankenau (circa 1858-1882). To honor Mary’s legacy after her death, daughter Elise suggested that her father, John D. Lankenau, found the Mary J. Drexel Home for the Aged. The home (now called The Hearth at Drexel) opened in 1888 and was originally located near the German Hospital before moving to Lower Merion.
