Description

This dinner plate from John Rozet Drexel’s yacht, Sultana, is white ceramic with decorative gilding and enameled blue, red, gray and black decoration. The plate’s rim is a gilded band overlaid with a repeating black Greek key and a row of gilt pendant dots. Inside the decorative bands on the rim is a motif of two crossed flags with gilt flag poles tied with a gilded ribbon. The flags are the New York Yacht Club’s burgee (blue with a red cross and white star at the intersection) and John Rozet Drexel's private signal flag (quartered with two quarters containing blue horizontal stripes on white and two quarters containing red crosses on white). Below the flags are the initials “J.R.D.” in gilding, for John Rozet Drexel.
