At the time of this interview, Vasanti Makan was 76 1/2 years old and said that she had an occupation in home economics and previous experience in teaching. Vasanti Makan was residing in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview begins with an account of learning about COVID-19 as it was unfolding and the various sources of news to learn information. Vasanti Makan shares perspectives on how the United States responded to COVID-19. This interview also touches on the Black Lives Matter movement and protesting during a pandemic. Vasanti Makan considers preventative measures governments could have taken in response to the pandemic and addresses the need to prioritize health safety precautions and communicate information on COVID-19.
