Biographical Text

John Rozet Drexel (1863-1935) was the oldest son of Anthony J. Drexel and Ellen Roset Drexel. He spent a short time employed at Drexel & Co. prior to leaving banking for a life of leisure. He owned the steam yacht Sultana but was not overly interested in yachting or socializing. John R. Drexel married Alice Gordon Troth (1865–1947) in 1886 and the couple lived in New York with their children before moving to Paris.

They had three children who survived to adulthood: John "Jack" Rozet Drexel, Jr., Alice Gordon Drexel, and Gordon Preston Drexel. Their first child, Lillian Mae Drexel, died of meningitis as a child while the family was traveling aboard their steam yacht Sultana.
