Daughter of Frances Drexel and James W. Paul, Jr., Mary Astor Paul was presented to Philadelphia society in 1907 after spending much of her youth at Woodcrest in Radnor, PA. Her siblings were Ellen Paul Mills and Anthony J.D. Paul. She married Charles Munn in 1909, and they had four children together, living at Woodcrest until 1924 at which time the family moved to Paris. Mary remained in Paris with the children after her divorce from Charles in 1930; she married Jacques Allez in 1934. She helped with American aid efforts in Paris during World War II and played a key role in the French Resistance under the code name "Pauline." Mary was President of the American Aid Society of Paris and was awarded the American Medal of Freedom by President Truman for her services to U.S. troops in Paris. She was also given the title of Knight of the French Legion of Honor by President Vincent Auriol.
