Biographical Text
Daughter of Francis A. Drexel and niece to Anthony J. Drexel, Katharine entered religious life and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People in 1891. The Order's mission focused on service and education for underserved populations of Native American and Black youth. This mission was accomplished through funding, building, and staffing Catholic boarding and day schools which aimed to "save" the youth in these communities through assimilation to the dominant white culture and conversion to Catholicism.
The order is now known as the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS). Katharine Drexel was sainted in 2000. Read more about her life and work here.
