Biographical Text
Called 'Sallie' by her family, was the fourth child of Anthony J. and Ellen Drexel. After the death of her first husband, John Ruckmen Fell, in 1895, Sarah was left to manage the vast financial resources of the Drexel and Fell families. Married Alexander Van Rensselaer in 1898. An active philanthropist and visible socialite in Philadelphia. Sarah donated considerable amounts to the Drexel Institute, and the Sarah Drexel Van Rensselaer Dormitory for Women was built in 1935 with her financial support.
