Subject
Drexel, Anthony J. (Anthony Joseph), 1826-1893
Biographical Text
Born in 1826 to Francis Martin and Catherine Hookey Drexel. Received some formal education at a French and English day school before beginning to work at his father's currency brokerage house at age thirteen. Married Elllen Bicking Rosét on August 13, 1850. He was made a partner at Drexel & Co. at 21, and became the head of the bank after his father's death in 1863. Anthony and his brother Francis were largely responsible for growing the success and wealth of Drexel & Co. Notably wary of public speaking and attention, Anthony was known to be even-keeled and often sought out for advice. He was a mentor and partner of J. P. Morgan. Traveled to Europe once a year on business, and to rest at a spa resort in Carlsbad, Czech Republic. Died in 1893 in Carlsbad, two years after the opening of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry in Philadelphia.
