Long Branch House

Long Branch House

It is no coincidence that Ulysses S. Grant's summer home was next door to the house Anthony J. Drexel and George W. Childs shared in Long Branch, New Jersey, a popular beach resort town since the late 18th century. General Ulysses S. Grant met George W. Childs in the summer of 1863, after the Union Army's victory at Vicksburg, and the two formed a strong friendship. Childs soon introduced Grant to Drexel, who became a friend and financial counselor to the future president.
